Romanian energy update

Romania’s National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) recently adopted Order no. 202/2019, which was endorsed by Approval no. 89/2019. This approval outlined procedures for operating the intraday electricity market as managed by OPCOM, the country’s electricity market administrator.

These regulatory measures launched the second phase of coupling initiatives designed to support localized electricity projects. Romania participates in the EU’s LIP 15 initiative, which aims to integrate the nation through intraday markets with neighboring countries including Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia.

Takeaway

The expansion of intraday market operations to a regional scale through a Europe-wide framework is anticipated to generate several benefits. These include increased liquidity in the market, reduced concentration of market power through enhanced competition, more efficient use of production capacity and resources, improved cross-border electricity transport capabilities, and strengthened supply security for Romanian consumers.
